Honoring Sacrifice on National Purple Heart Day

Today, August 7th, we pause to recognize the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat.

The Purple Heart, originally established by General George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, stands as one of the oldest and most respected military decorations still in use. It is awarded to those who have shed blood in service to our nation — a symbol of courage, resilience, and dedication beyond self.

At AFA Palm Springs, we honor all Purple Heart recipients — past and present — for their service and their sacrifice. This solemn observance reminds us of the real cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of those who have borne that burden.

Let us never forget their stories, their names, and the values they stood for.

Smash Burgers, Fries, and Good Times with Air Commandos

We did love the Smash Burgers today for our casual “Air Commandos” meet-up at ROC’S Firehouse Grille. ROC’S is the best!

Join us every other Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at ROC’S Firehouse Grille, 36891 Cook Street, Palm Desert, CA 92211. You’ll meet some interesting people while enjoying lunch and good conversation.

Over the summer, please send us an email at AFAPalmSprings@outlook.com first, as there are no special programs until fall—just lunch and good times together.

Only cost is your own lunch. See you there!

R.E.D. Friday: Remember Everyone Deployed

R.E.D. Friday — Remember Everyone Deployed

Every Friday, people across the country wear red as a simple but powerful gesture to honor our deployed service members. While they serve far from home, we wear red to keep them close in our thoughts.

Today, May 16, 2025, we mark a special observance of R.E.D. Friday. Let’s take a moment to recognize the sacrifices of our troops and their families — and keep them in mind not just today, but every Friday until they all return safely.

Thank You to the Armed Services YMCA for this reminder and for all they do in support of the military community.

The Palm Springs Chapter 134 of the Air & Space Forces Association proudly honors one of our own—USAF Major (Ret.) Lee Cohen—on his selection to **Honor Flight Southland’s Mission #18**. Major Cohen joins a distinguished group of veterans receiving an all-expense-paid journey to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.

Major Cohen’s Air Force career spans pivotal moments in Cold War and Vietnam-era history. Commissioned in 1959, he began his service in electronic warfare with the EB-57, testing NORAD defense systems and training interceptor pilots. Later, he flew with the 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Alaska—recognized twice as the best in the Air Force—before deploying to Southeast Asia during Operation Rolling Thunder. There, he flew 119 ½ combat missions over North Vietnam in EB-57s and F-102s.

For his courageous service, Major Cohen was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and nine Air Medals. After contributing to planning efforts for the return of American POWs and serving in key operational roles, he retired in 1978 as a Major. He now resides in Beaumont, California.
